Connection isn't sovereignty and that changes everything. I think I've been wrong about connection. Not completely wrong, but I've been giving it a job that doesn't belong to it. I've been treating connection like it is sovereignty.
Connection meant I'm present. I'm open. And I can think clearly. I have access to myself.
Therefore, I'm sovereign. Protection meant that I moved away from that. Collapse meant that I moved even further away from that. Nice, neat model.
Except it doesn't bloody work because I've now realized I can be in protection and still be completely sovereign. So if sovereignty can exist in protection, connection cannot be sovereignty. And that changes the whole model. Let's State vs authority — the distinction that changed the model separate the two things that we've been mixing together.
We need to separate state from authority. Connection is a state. Protection is a state or protective condition. Collapse is a state of conservation or shutdown.
But sovereignty, sovereignty describes something else. Who's leading? That's authority. And once I separated those two things, a lot started making sense because you can be in exactly the same state as someone else and have a completely different relationship with it.
You can be calm and still not be Why being calm doesn’t mean you’re sovereign sovereign. Imagine you're sitting with someone who is angry with you. You're calm. Your voice is soft.
You're listening. You don't argue. Looks beautifully regulated. But inside you're terrified they'll reject you.
So you agree. You apologize for something that you don't believe you did. You shrink yourself. You tell them what they want to hear.
You abandon your own position to preserve connection. You're calm. You're connected to them. But are you connected to yourself?
Maybe not. And are you sovereign? If the old protective program is making the choices, then I'd say no. That's important because outward calmness tells us absolutely nothing Can you be in protection and still be sovereign? about sovereignty.
Now take someone in protection. Something genuinely threatening is happening. Their heart rate increases. Their energy rises.
They're alert. They're watching. They're calculating what's happening. They decide, "I need to leave." and they leave.
They may be far more activated than the first person, but they remained connected to themselves. They assessed reality. They made the decision. They acted.
That's sovereignty. So connection and sovereignty can't simply be the same thing. Then what the hell is connection? So what actually is connection?
This is where I started pulling it apart. Maybe connection isn't the place where sovereignty lives. Maybe connection is the condition where more of you becomes available. Think about yourself when you're genuinely connected.
You're not obsessively managing danger. You're not shutting everything down. You have access to more. Curiosity, reasoning, creativity, perspective, play, intuition, discernment, flexible attention, empathy, humor, possibility.
You can hold more than one idea at once. You can change your mind. You can notice something without immediately reacting to it. You have options.
That's Connection as availability important. Connection might be about availability. This word fits better for me. Availability.
When I'm connected, more of my internal resources are available. That doesn't necessarily mean I'm happy. I could be sad and connected. I could be grieving and connected.
I could even be angry and connected. Connection isn't everything feels lovely. Connection is more like I'm still here with myself while this is happening. And because I'm still here, I have access to more of myself.
That's very different from saying connection Why protection can look completely different equals sovereignty. This also explains why protection can look so different. If protection automatically cuts you off from connection, then we would expect everyone in protection to lose access to reasoning, perspective, choice. But that doesn't happen.
Sometimes protection creates panic. Sometimes it creates tunnel vision. Sometimes it creates aggression. But sometimes it can make you bloody sharp.
You become observant, strategic, focused, decisive. So maybe the question isn't simply, am I in protection? Maybe it's how much access to myself do I still have while Can connection travel with you? protection is active? Now we're getting somewhere.
What if connection can travel? This is the idea that really got me. What if connection isn't somewhere that you go to? What if spending time in connection develops capacities?
Think about what happens when you repeatedly practice observing your thoughts, choosing where your attention goes. sitting with discomfort, questioning predictions, trusting yourself, making deliberate choices, allowing people to be disappointed, staying present instead of automatically reacting. You're practicing something again and again and again. At first maybe you do these things when everything is calm but eventually something difficult happens and those abilities do not completely disappear. You bring them with you.
Maybe connection is the training ground. Connection may be the training ground That possibility fascinates me. At first I need to get back to connection so I can think. Later you say, "I can think while protection is still active." At first you say, "I need to calm down before I can make a decision." Later you say, "I'm activated, but I'm still here.
I can assess this." At first, someone's angry. I need to fix this. Later, they're angry. I can tolerate that while I decide what I actually think.
Something has changed. You've developed capacity. Connection may have been where you practiced it, but now you own it. How sovereignty develops like a skill This is like training any ability.
Imagine learning to drive. At first, you need perfect conditions. You're concentrating on everything. Hands here.
Check the mirrors, indicator, brake. Bloody hell, there's another car. Everything requires conscious effort. Eventually, you can drive in traffic, then rain, then unfamiliar roads, then somebody's talking beside you.
The skill becomes more robust. Maybe sovereignty develops like that too. At first, you need favorable internal conditions to access yourself. Then slowly you learn to access yourself under pressure.
That's massive because the goal changes. The trap of trying to stay regulated all the time The goal isn't to protect connection at all costs. This is where I think we could accidentally create another trap. If we decide connection is the good state, we start trying to preserve it.
I must stay calm. I must stay regulated. I must not get activated. I must get back to connection.
Now we're bloody protecting connection and potentially avoiding life to stay there. That's not sovereignty. A sovereign person should be able to meet life. Sometimes life requires openness.
Sometimes it requires defense. Sometimes it requires intense focus. Sometimes it requires rest. The goal can't be never leave connection.
Maybe the goal is not to leave yourself Maybe it's don't leave yourself. That is very different. And this makes connection even more important, not less. I don't want this to sound like I'm downgrading connection.
I am actually doing the opposite. Because now What connection actually gives you connection has a much more useful purpose. It's where you can experience. This is what it's like when I'm not automatically being run.
You become familiar with yourself. You learn what your own thoughts sound like. You learn where you [snorts] actually want attention. You learn what yes feels like, what no feels like.
You learn what curiosity feels like. You learn what choices feel like. You practice leadership. And the more familiar those capacities become, the easier they are to access when conditions change.
So How connection strengthens sovereignty maybe connection is where sovereignty gets stronger. Not because connection is sovereignty, but because connection gives sovereignty room to practice. That's a very different calm. Connection makes resources available.
Practice strengthens access to those resources. Self-rust develops through using them. Then pressure arrives and instead of disappearing into an automatic state, more of you remains available. You can say, "Yeah, protection's here.
I can feel it. I can see why. Now, what do I want to do?" That's sovereignty Have we misunderstood collapse too? operating inside protection. And this raises an interesting question about collapse.
Because if we misunderstood protection, Because if we misunderstood protection, have we misunderstood collapse as well? We've been describing collapse as numb, shut down, disconnected, low energy, and yes, it absolutely can be those things. But what if a sovereign person recognizes my body has had enough, resources are low, I need to stop. And instead of fighting it, they deliberately allow conservation.
They rest. They withdraw from unnecessary demands. They stop producing. They let the body recover.
And because they're not fighting themselves, maybe that experience doesn't even feel frightening. Maybe it feels relieving. Now, we've got another problem with our model. Because suddenly collapse might not automatically mean I've lost sovereignty.
Maybe the deeper question is still who is leading. But here's where I've landed with Connection is not the finish line connection. Connection isn't sovereignty. Connection is not the finish line.
And protection isn't proof that you've gone backwards. Maybe connection is where your widest range of your capacities becomes available and easier to access. And sovereignty is what happens when you become increasingly able to use those capacities wherever life takes you. That feels much more realistic and much more Sovereignty when life gets difficult powerful because I don't want sovereignty that only works when life is peaceful.
What use is that? I want sovereignty when someone disagrees with me. When something goes wrong, when I'm scared, when I'm under pressure, when I need to protect myself, when I'm exhausted, when life isn't behaving the way I wanted, that's when I need Learning to take yourself with you leadership the most. So maybe the goal was never stay in connection.
Maybe connection teaches us something a lot bigger. how to stay connected to ourselves. And eventually, you don't have to desperately get back to yourself each time life knocks you sideways because more and more you take yourself with you. If this made you recognize how Free Deprogramming course you run, don't stop at recognition. My free deprogramming course will help you uncover the patterns that are making those decisions and reactions before you even realize it.
You don't need fixing. You just need to see how you run. The link is in the description.
